Surat court
dismisses Rahul
Gandhi’s appeal
Apr 21, a Surat Sessions
Court dismissed Congress
leader Rahul Gandhi’s plea
for suspending his two-
year sentence in the
‘Modi surname’
defamation case. He still
stands sentenced for tw
years and continues to be
disqualified as an MP.
On Apr 13, 2019, while
campaigning for the Lok
Sabha elections, Rahul had
posed at an election rally
in Kolar, Karnataka: “Why
do all thieves, be it Nirav
Modi, Lalit Modi, or
Narendra Modi, have the
surname ‘Modi’?” A BJP
MLA from Surat Modi had
filed a complaint against
Rahul for defaming the
entire Modi community.
As the magistrate also
asked Rahul if he had
accused Prime Minister
Narendra Modi of giving
₹ 30 crore to an
industrialist? The Gandhi-
scion claimed that it was
his right to raise such
issues in the rallies. Rahul
will now approach the

Apr 19, observing that a
corruption case can be a
serious threat to society
and must be dealt with an
iron hand, the SC has held
that prior sanction of an
appropriate authority was
not needed for laying a
trap to catch an officer
red-handed and quashed
the anticipatory bail
granted to an income tax
additional commissioner
who was caught for
allegedly taking bribes.
A bench of Justices Surya
Kant and J K Maheshwari
said the court must draw a
delicate balance between
liberty of an individual and
the need for a fair and
free investigation while
deciding a bail plea. It said
the Gujarat HC had
granted bail without
considering the gravity of
the offence as the accused
seemed to be part of an
organised syndicate of IT
officers, businessmen and
hawala traders working in
tandem which needed to
be probed. The accused
had argued that a prior
sanction was needed
