Oct 12, suspecting a
conspiracy behind the
sudden surge in the
Muslim population in
several districts of
Uttarakhand, security
agencies submitted a
report to the Home
Ministry earlier this year.
In the study, ‘vulnerable
areas’ were specified.
The demographic shift in
these districts was
presented using the 2011
census and it was
shocking to see that
within a decade, the
number of illegal
immigrants settled in
these lands had
increased two and a half
fold.
Apart from the border
areas of Uttarakhand, an
alert was issued for many
areas in Uttar Pradesh.
The reason being, that
within the last 2 years,
almost 400 new
madrasas, mosques and
religious institutions have
mushroomed in areas like
Bahraich that share an
international border with
Nepal to the north and
the Gorakhpur-Basti
division.

Wednesday, China had
objected to Indian vice-
president Venkaiah
Naidu’s visit to
Arunachal Pradesh.
India slammed the
Chinese objections,
asserting that Arunachal
Pradesh is an integral
and inalienable part of
India. Indian leaders
routinely travel to the
state of Arunachal
Pradesh as they do to
any other state of India.
The Indian foreign office
called on China to work
instead to resolve of the
ongoing military
standoff along their Line
of Actual Control (LAC)
border at Ladakh.

Oct 17, three more Bihari
migrant workers were shot
dead by terrorists in
Kashmir, taking the tally of
targeted civilians killings to
11 over the last fortnight.
13 terrorists and 8 security
personnel have also been
killed. Civilian killings are
claimed by Pakistan based
TRF, the LeT and ULF.
Terrorists have asked
civilians to show identity
cards to select targets for
killing.
Monday, home minister,
Amit Shah, convened a
security meeting with
police heads from all
states, NSA and others to
counter these killings. J&K
forces had attempted to
corral migrant workers to
army and police camps for
protection. A crackdown
on overground workers
has also been effected.
The violence will impact
tourism negatively making
it unpopular among locals.
It seems to have been
triggered by the peace
that prevailed post
abrogation of article 370.

Oct 12, Pakistan
government confirmed
that there is a stalemate
between prime minister
(PM) Imran Khan and
chief of army staff,
general Bajwa over the
appointment of the new
ISI chief. A long meeting
between the two over
the appointment, on
Monday night, ended
with the premier telling
the army chief that the
authority to appoint the
new spymaster rests
with him. However, the
PM office has yet to
issue a notification for
the new ISI chief.
Earlier on Oct 6, the
military’s media wing
had declared lieutenant
general Nadeem Anjum
the new DG ISI,
replacing the outgoing
chief General Faiz
Hameed. However, the
PM is reported to be in
favour of granting an
extension to the
outgoing ISI chief. The
rift is yet to be resolved
almost a week later.

the episode. With this, a
total of 4 people have
been arrested in the
matter.
Earlier in the day,
Nihang Sikh Sarabjit
Singh was produced

Sonipat, from where he
was sent to seven-day

had on Friday
surrendered to the
police and claimed
responsibility for the

Oct 18, the Indian
Navy received its 11

Poseidon P-8I long-
range reconnaissance
and anti-submarine

Boeing. The Navy plans
to have a total of 22 of
these aircraft in the
next few years.
India has used the P-8I
to track Chinese vessel
movements in the
Indian Ocean,
especially submarines.
It was also used to
track Chinese troop
deployments along the
Line of Actual Control
amid the ongoing
standoff in eastern
Ladakh and during the
73-day-long Doklam
standoff. It has also
helped track Pakistani
troops movement
after the Pulwama

The PM recounted that
there was a time when
Indian ordinance
factories were amongst
the most powerful in
the world. Post
independence, these
factories needed
nurturing but were
made to languish. A
dependence on imports
was fostered. It is time,
he emphasized, to
reinvigorate our own
defence production
capabilities. The new
companies have already
been issued orders of
65,000 crores.
Reforms in the defence
industry have brought
in transparency, trust
and opportunity for the
private sector to
partner the
government. Defence
corridors in UP and
Chennai quickly
engaged the interest of
major defense entities.
Defence export has
increased by more than
325 per cent in the last
five years due to better
policies. Technological
innovation will hold the
key to success in
future, he concluded.

The Home Ministry
took the decision in the
exercise of powers
conferred by section
129 (1) of the Border
Security Force Act,
1948.
In Rajasthan, BSF's
authority will remain at
50 km as before.
Earlier, the limit was
fixed to 15 km in West
Bengal, Assam and
Punjab. According to
the notification, the
lowest ranking officer
of the BSF has been
empowered under the
Code of Criminal
Procedure (CrPC) to

aimed to improve
effectiveness in curbing
infiltration and cross-

The step is in keeping
with India’s unitary
nature of federalism,
where the centre has
the prerogative to
override states even on
items in the concurrent
list.
