PM Modi at SCO: Don’t rush to
recognize
Taliban rule, can’t let radicalism
take over
Sep 17, addressing the
21
st
summit of the
Shanghai Cooperation
Organization (SCO) in
Dushanbe, Tajikistan,
virtually, prime minister
Modi set out a clear
direction on how
countries could
collectively approach
the Afghanistan crisis.
PM Modi emphasized
that representation of
women and minorities
in governance is
essential. The decision
to accord recognition to
a new governing
dispensation in
Afghanistan must not
be rushed. The global
community must think
it through and take a
collective decision. On
the governance of
Afghanistan, India
believes the United
Nations must take a
lead role.
If instability and
fanaticism continue in
Afghanistan, that will
fuel extremism and
terrorism on a global
scale. Other terrorist
groups may be inspired
to replicate the
Taliban’s success and
take to armed
insurgency and
violence.
A third aspect of the
fall out of the turmoil
in Afghan is a likelihood
of an unrestricted rise
in drugs, illicit weapons

Sep 17, ex-API Sachin
Waze disclosed in a
statement to the
Enforcement Directorate
(ED) that Maharashtra
transport minister Anil
Parab and ex-
Maharashtra home
minister Anil Deshmukh,
received ₹20 crore each,
from 10 deputy
commissioners of police
(DCP) in Mumbai to
reverse their transfer
orders, which the then
city police commissioner
Param Bir Singh had
issued. The statement is
part of ED chargesheet
filed before a special
court against Deshmukh’s
assistants.
In July 2020, Param Bir
Singh had issued transfer
orders to 10 DCPs.
Deshmukh and Parab
were unhappy with the
orders and had them
stalled after extorting the
sum from the 10 officers.
ED’s probe has also
revealed that between
Jan and Feb 2021, Waze
handed over 16 bags of
money with ₹4.6 crore in
cash to Deshmukh’s PA.

Owners will need to

year they were forced

Commissioners will now

Waze confessed to the
Enforcement Directorate
(ED) that the former
Maharashtra home

revealed that Deshmukh
used to call him to his
office or home to instruct
him directly about various
cases including the TRP
scam case against
Republic TV. In what is a
major vindication for the
channel, it issued a
statement that the fake
TRP case was a conspiracy
to denigrate India’s
largest news network. It
also asked media houses
that amplified those
allegations, to introspect.

Sep 15, The US, UK and
Australia have
announced a new
strategic alliance-AUKUS
that aims to help
Australia build a fleet of
nuclear-powered
submarines and deepen
cooperation in defense.
The intention is to
counter the growing
security challenge from
China and its warming
ties with Russia.
While the submarines
will not be ready until
well into the next
decade, the move has
drawn criticism from
China, France and
others. China has
accused the pact of
undermining the nuclear
non-proliferation
and
intensifying a Cold War
era like arms race.
France had a $65 billion
deal to make
conventional submarines
for Australia which the
latter rescinded. France
has recalled its
ambassadors to the US
and Australia in protest.
