Assam, Mizoram dial down tensions
over the recent violent border dispute
Aug 2, Both Assam and
Mizoram have agreed
to dial down tensions a
week after violent
clashes erupted along a
disputed state border
between their armed
police forces on Jul 26.
Monday, the Assam
police withdrew the FIR
against the Mizoram’s
Rajya Sabha MP, K
Vanlalvena, who had
allegedly declared that
the next time Assam
police crossed into
Mizoram all their men
would be killed, not just
a few. Assam will still
press charges against
Mizoram police
personnel, however.
The Mizoram
government, on its
part, withdrew the FIR
filed against Assam
chief minister (CM)
Himanta Biswa Sarma
and other Assam police
officers on criminal
charges including
attempt to murder.
Jul 26, at least six
Assam police personnel
and one civilian were
killed, more than 65
police personnel and
civilians were injured
in a gun-fight between
the Assam and
Mizoram police forces
along the disputed
state border. It also
involved locals of
Lailapur, Assam and
Vairengte, Mizoram.
Following the incident
Assam police had filed
an FIR against the Mizo
MP Vanlalvena and
Mizoram police officers
claiming they that
Mizoram had
commenced road
construction and
created an armed camp
encroaching Assamese
reserved forest area.
Mizoram police had
also resorted to firing
with automatic
weapons during the
skirmish. Mizoram
countered with its FIR
at the Vairengte police
station, implicating
Assam CM Sarma and
top Assam police
officers. Mizoram’s FIR
claimed a fully armed

(J&K) Lieutenant
Governor (LG) Manoj
Sinha approved the
transfer of 34 acres of
land, across 5 districts,
for constructing 2,600

This initiative is part of

Jul 23 The French
parliament adopted the
Law Reinforcing
Respect of the
Principles of the
Republic. An anti-
separatism bill, it aims
to prevent any political
and religious movement
from creating a parallel
society where religious
law takes precedence
over a civil one. It will
now to go to the
Constitutional Council
before Macron signs the
bill into law.
The bill was adopted in
the lower house by a
vote of 49 to 19. It was
drafted in the wake of a
series of stabbing and
beheading attacks in
France, including that of
a teacher Samuel Paty
and an assault at the
Nice cathedral.
The initial aim of the bill
was to fight online hate
speech and doxing,
strengthen checks on
foreign funding of
religious bodies, restrict
homeschooling and
reinforce religious and
political neutrality in
public service. It
evolved to cover
women’s rights such as
a ban on the burqa in a
government or private
office, or when availing
public transport. It bans
polygamy, forced
marriages and issuance
of virginity certificates.
It makes places of
worship more
transparent and
proscribes political
meetings in a religious
building, among others.
A day after it was
adopted an imam was
dismissed from a
mosque in the Loire
province after he
delivered an
objectionable sermon
reciting Quranic verses
and a hadith but
breaching gender
neutrality. The imam’s
residency will not be
extended and the
mosque has been
warned it will be shut
down if such a lecture is
repeated.

The origins of Mizoram and the conflict in North East India
by Ahoms and then the
British. But there is not
a single mention of
Mizos’ or ‘Mizoram’
until 19th and early
20th century.
Who are the ‘Mizos’?
Earlier, this region was
inhabited by Reangs
(Hindus) and Chakmas
(Buddhists). There was
no trace of any ‘Mizo’.
Who we now refer to
as ‘Mizos’ are actually a
collection of distinct
tribes like Lushai, Kuki,
Paite and Hmar. They
all came to India in 18th
century. In-fact, it was
officially known as
Lushai Hills’ until 1952.
According to their own
folklore, the original
home of the "Mizo"
tribes seems to be a
place called Sinlung.
Mizo historians
themselves identified
this place to be present
Silung in South East
China. They
established themselves
in Chin hills (present
day Burma) by 17th
century.
However, there was no
common "Mizo
identity" among these
tribes and they were
warring with each
other. Abducting each
other and head hunting
was the norm. In fact,
the earliest known
picture of any Mizo was
that of a Lushai woman
captured by a Southern
tribe called Mara.
When the Mizo tribes
first encountered the
Hindus of Assam, their
feeling was of
admiration. An early
Mizo Christian
Newspaper warned,
‘Hindu customs,
especially Assamese
customs, are
something the Mizo
really appreciate.’
Mizos even say 'If only
we were born as Vai
(plain Hindus)’
The missionaries
sensed the danger of
Mizos adopting Hindu
culture and
immediately sprung
into action. Result was
complete conversion of
Mizos. Starting from
dress, music, culture,
religion and custom
everything was
discarded.
It was the Christian
missionaries who first
started inculcating a
‘Mizo racial identity’.
For example, the
Baptist church wrote
that ‘the ethnicities of
Lushei, Kuki & Chin can
be classified as one
race. They are sturdy
hill warriors unlike the
effeminate Assamese
and Bengali.’
Soon enough the
traditional Mizo
animist temples were
converted to Churches.
Even at this point,
Churches were not
built in Christian style.
They were still the old
thatched huts with the
traditional drum
hanging out. The Drum
had great significance
in pre Christian Mizo
religion.
By early 20th century,
Mizos began shedding
their traditional
costumes which they
themselves referred to
as ‘primitive’. They
adopted western style,
costume, religion &
script. Bands of Mizos
children raised up in
Churches began touring
all over India to sing
Christian choirs
The new Lushai tribe
converts formed a
‘Young Lushai
Association’ in 1935.
One of the stated aims
of the association was
to ‘remove every trace
of pre Christian pagan
culture among the
tribes.’ The Christian
association stressed for
‘a common identity of
all converted tribes’.
Converted tribes began
to increasingly use the
now common Christian,
identity of "Mizo" as
opposed to anything
specific to any tribe.
‘Young Lushai
Association’ renamed
itself ‘Young Mizo
Association’. Lushai
Hills were renamed as
‘Mizo Hills’. Thus came
about the ethnogenesis
of Mizos.
During the time of
independence in 1947,
a group of Mizos
formed the ‘United
Mizo Freedom
Organisation’. They
demanded that this
region be merged in
Burma as opposed to
India. They claimed
that they were
ethnically closer to
Burmese Chin than
Hindus.
When their demands
of separate
nationhood were
ignored, Mizo
separatists formed a
terrorist organization
named Mizo National
Front (MNF) in 1966.
Their aim was to ‘kick
India out of Mizoram
through violent means
if necessary’. They
began killing
Assamese, Hindus and
army men.
MNF then received
funding and training
from Pakistan's ISI.
Many of Mizo youth
escaped to East
Pakistan (Bangladesh)
to receive military
training. The Present
CM of Mizoram,
Zoramthanga, was a
member of this
terrorist group MNF.
He himself confessed it
in a media
conversation.
When India defeated
Pakistan in 1971,
present Mizo chief

Recently, 6 soldiers of

martyred defending
territorial boundaries of
Assam from Mizoram
encroachers backed by
Mizoram police. This is
a thread about Mizoram
and the origin of this
conflict.
To be sure, Assam is not
the only state Mizoram
is at loggerheads with.
Mizoram also has
conflicts with other
states on its border.
Last year, Mizoram
targeted a village on
Tripura border because
Hindus of the village
planned to construct
Shiva temple.
For Mizoram, which
does not celebrate
"International Yoga
Day" because Church
considers Yoga "anti-
Christian", building a
Hindu temple was too
much. Mizoram
Government imposed
section 144 because "a
Hindu temple would
disturb peace and
tranquility".
Here is a question:
Mizoram was earlier a
district in Assam by
name "Mizo hills".
When it started
agitation for statehood,
its population was 1.96
lakh. Even today,
Mizoram population is
10.91 lakhs. How could
a small district bully the
nation to accept its
separatist demand?
To attempt an answer,
we delve into history.
And history is shocking.
This region was ruled
Karma in its effect on
character is the most
tremendous power
that man has to deal
with. Man is, as it
were, a centre, and is
attracting all the
powers of the universe
towards himself, `and
in this centre is fusing
them all and again
sending them off in a
big current. Such a
centre is the real man
the almighty, the
omniscient and he
draws the whole
universe towards him.
Good and bad, misery
and happiness, all are
running towards him
and clinging round him;
and out of them he
fashions the mighty
stream of tendency
called character and
throws it outwards. As
he has the power of
drawing in anything, so
has he the power of
throwing it out.
All the actions that we
see in the world, all the
movements in human
society, all the works
that we have around
us, are simply the
display of thought, the
manifestation of the
will of man. Machines
or instruments, cities,
ships, or men-of-war,
all these are simply the
manifestation of the
will of man; and this
will is caused by
character, and
character is
manufactured by
Karma. As is Karma, so
is the manifestation of
the will. The men of
mighty will the world
has produced have all
been tremendous
workers gigantic
souls, with wills
powerful enough to
overturn worlds, wills
they got by persistent
work, through ages,
and ages. Such a
gigantic will as that of a
Buddha or a Jesus
could not be obtained
in one life, for we know
who their fathers were.
It is not known that
their fathers ever
spoke a word for the
good of mankind.

Pakistan along with
his comrades. He was
involved with an MNF
unit named ‘Joshua’.
It was named after
the Biblical
commander Joshua
who defeated and
killed Pagan
Canaanites and ended
their Pagan kingdom
in Israel.
Here, as present
Mizoram chief
minister himself
confesses in his
interview, he was in
Islamabad until 1975
as part of ISI training
to MNF. When Indian
army conquered
Dhaka, he managed
to escape narrowly.
He calls it a "James
Bond type of escape".
During the Mizoram
insurgency, Hindus
were targeted.
Violence was
unleashed on Hindus
and 34,000 Hindu
Reang (Bru) were
kicked out of
Mizoram. They are
still living in refugee
tents of Tripura.
The Hindus Reangs
were original
inhabitants before
Mizo migration.
However, they were
ruthlessly targeted.
‘Quit Mizoram’
notices with deadlines
were posted in Reang
villages. ‘Mizoram is
for Mizos only’ said
Pu Laldenga. He later
became Mizoram
chief minister.
The Mizo insurgency
lasted for 2 decades.
The MNF finally gave
up militancy when they
signed Mizoram peace
accord in 1986.
In return
1) India gave statehood
to Mizoram
2) Special category
status to Mizoram
3) Revoked all criminal
cases on MNF
members and lifted
ban on MNF
In addition, Mizoram
was given special
privilege. No Act of
Indian Parliament
would be legalized in
Mizoram unless the
state government
approves it. Then the
MNF gave up militancy
and became part of
Indian democracy.
Also, Mizoram is
accorded special and
disproportionate share
of the budget. These
were the doles given
out to MNF and they
agreed to sign Mizo
accord.
